Science Investigation: Solids, Liquids, and Gases!

Year 4 turned into mini-scientists today as we explored the fascinating world of States of Matter.

We kicked things off with a hands-on challenge: Which balloons can you change the shape of? As you can see in the photos, there was plenty of squeezing, prodding, and poking as we investigated how solids, liquids, and gases behave differently when under pressure.

While we don't have photos for our second experiment, it was undoubtedly the highlight of the day! Our mission was to snip the knots off the balloons and attempt to empty the contents into a bowl to see what happened.

The results were immediate:

The solids stayed exactly where they were.

The liquids... well, they certainly didn't!

The experiment resulted in some very soggy scientists— myself included!!! It was a brilliant (if slightly damp) way to witness firsthand how liquids flow and pour to take the shape of their container, while gases simply made a quick escape.
